VINTAGE PEEK FREAN & CO LTD BISCUIT TIN MANUFACTURER'S SAMPLE TINPLATE C1900

This is a vintage Peek Frean & Co Ltd biscuit tin made from offset litho printed tinplate and dating from approximately 1900. It was produced by the manufacturer as a sample size to promote their latest designs and products.
The tin is rectangular with rounded corners, and has an image of a green ribbon printed on a yellow lid and sides. It has a hinged lid.
Dimensions: 9cm wide x 6.5cm deep x 4.3cm high
The tin has no dents, and the hinges and lid are fully intact. However there are some scratches and general wear and mensurate with the tin's age. It is from a smoke and pet free home.
The British biscuit tin came about when the Licensed Grocer's Act of 1861 allowed groceries to be individually packaged and sold. This coincided with the removal of the duty on paper for printed labels. It was only a short step to the idea of printing directly onto tinplate. The new process of offset lithography (patented in 1877) allowed multicoloured designs to be printed onto exotically shaped tins. The advent of the 2nd WW stopped all production of decorative tinware and after it ended in 1945 the custom was never really revived.
We are located in Trowse near Norwich, just a few mins drive from County Hall and the football ground, and 5 mins drive from the Southern Bypass.
