VERY RARE 1898 EXPERIMENTAL MARK III .303 BULLET CARTRIDGE CASE
DIMENSIONS CONFORM TO A .303 CARTRIDGE CASE AND HAS THE HEADSTAMPS ‘ZIIIR’
THE ROMAN NUMERAL DESIGNATION OF ‘III’ REFERS TO A MARK III BULLET. THE MARK III WAS ONLY PRODUCED IN 1898. MARK III BULLETS WERE EXPANDING BULLETS AND WERE BANNED BY HAGUE CONVENTION IN 1899
A ‘Z’ DESIGNATION REFERS TO A BULLET WHOSE PROPELLANT IS NOT THE STANDARD CORDITE BUT NITRO-CELLULOSE
A ‘R’ DESIGNATION REFERS TO A ROYAL LABORATORY AT WOOLWICH (ARSENAL) PRODUCED BULLET
THIS IS THE FIRST PHYSICAL EVIDENCE OF A MARK III .303 WITH NITRO-CELLULOSE
BRASS FIRING RING DIFFERENT COLOUR TO CASE WHICH HAS A COPPERISH COLOUR: COPPER BATHED/SHEATHED CARTRIDGE CASES WERE USED WITH EXPERIMENTAL ROUNDS
119,000 MARK III BULLETS WERE ISSUED TO THE BRITISH ARMY IN 1898 BUT THEY WERE PROBLEMATIC AND RETURNED. BY THE END OF 1898 THE MARK IV HAD BEEN DESIGNED
IN 1899 THE MARK III WAS BANNED IN EUROPEAN WARFARE AS IT WAS AN EXPANDING BULLET – AN EARLY DUM-DUM BULLET. THIS LEFT VAST STOCKS OF THE PROBLEMATIC BULLET WHICH WERE THEN USED FOR TRAINING PURPOSES. NEW ZEALANDERS MAY WELL HAVE USED THE MARK III IN SOUTH AFRICA AGAINST THE BOERS DURING THE GREAT/SECOND BOER WAR 1899-1902
FOUND IN AN EAST SUSSEX (ENGLAND, UK) COASTAL BACK GARDEN IN THE 1970s. THE FIND LOCATION COULD RELATE TO A VICTORIAN ROYAL SUSSEX REGIMENT DRILL HALL. THE FIND LOCATION COULD ALSO RELATE TO 1940 OPERATION SEALION PERIOD FRONTLINE LDV/HOMEGUARD OR AUXILLIARIES USE (THE AUXILLIARIES WERE BEHIND THE LINES SECRET 4 MAN ASSASSIN/SABOTEUR UNITS WITH A LIFE EXPECTANCY OF 14 DAYS) WHEN INVASION AND ‘TOTAL WAR’ WAS IMMINENT AND SO THE ABSOLUTELY DEADLY MARK III’S, CAUSING HORRENDOUS WOUNDS, MAY WELL HAVE BEEN SECRETLY ISSUED.
THIS CARTRIDGE CASE IS THUS NOT ONLY A RARE SURVIVING MARK III BUT ALSO HAD A NON-STANDARD PROELLANT MAKING IT EVEN SCARCER AND WAS MADE AT THE ROYAL LABORATORY IN WOOLWICH, THE MOST COLLECTABLE LOCATION FOR AN EXPERIMENTAL ROUND
