Two Antique Victorian Mourning Brooches Black Jet And Vulcanite.
This is a private sale from a pet, smoke, and Covid free home. The charming brooches being offered for sale here as one lot belonged to my great grandmother – who was from the Victorian era.
When Prince Albert died Queen Victoria was so devastated that she, and her court, entered a period of deep mourning – which lasted for the rest of her life. Hence black mourning items became very fashionable during that period, and are highly collectable today.
The overall condition of both brooches is very good for their age, with no damage or repairs.

One of the brooches is highly decorative having been finely carved to represent a wreath with flowers, and a ribbon threaded through which has a pattern of small crosses along on its surface.
This attractive high quality black brooch has been tested and confirmed as being made from jet.
On the fixing plate for the metal pin clasp are the marks P.PAT N913124.
The size of this brooch is approximately 4.0 cm at its widest point and approximately 3.0 cm high.
The other brooch is oval and has very pretty detailing along its centre panel of a single spray of flowers – which looks like Lily Of The Valley or Solomon’s Seal – both of which had special significance in Victorian times. (The Victorians were very taken with the language of flowers, i.e. the meaning, and often secret messages, conveyed via the use of various different flowers.)
I believe this particular black brooch is made from vulcanite (a very popular material for jewellery in Victorian times).
I can’t see any marks on the metal clasp.
The size of this charming brooch is approximately 4.5 cm long x 1.5 cm wide.
