Pair Of Large Wooden High Back Antique Chairs Walking Fox Maker’s Mark Unusual Very Good Condition.
This attractive matching pair of antique wooden chairs makes a real statement.
The chairs are solid heavyweight quality pieces which have clearly been hand made by a skilled craftsman.
On the underside of each chair, at the rear, is a circular maker’s mark containing a walking fox.
There was a cabinet maker in London during the 19th century called T. Fox (an exhibitor at the 1851 Crystal Palace Exhibition). However, I don’t know what this maker’s mark looked like and the connection might be purely coincidental.
My mother purchased these chairs from an auction at a big old country house near Stratford On Avon, Warwickshire, in the early 1950’s. The chairs are believed to be from either the late 19th century or early 20th century.
Originally the seats and chair backs were canned, which was held in place with wooden pegs. My mother removed the cane as it needed repairing or replacing. However, she sadly lost interest in this project and for over 70 years these two chairs have been in storage in a clean, dry loft!
The chairs could either have their missing cane replaced to restore them to their original design or instead the seats and back rests could be upholstered.
The chairs appear to be predominantly made from Oak. The turned legs and stretchers might be made from a different wood; I’m not sure.
Given their age and previous use the chairs are in surprisingly good condition overall. There is no active woodworm and no signs of woodworm on either chair in the past. They are sturdy and sit well on a flat surface without any wobbles. There is just a poor minor repair (using glue) to the inside of one of the front stretches. This is not visible from the front or sides when the chair is in its normal position and as it is not broken right through it does not undermine the integrity of the chair. However, should you so wish it could presumably be made good fairly easily.

The chairs are approximately 126 cm high (to the top of their backrests), approximately 54 cm front to back (between the outer most edges of the legs), and approximately 48 cm between the outer left and right front edges of each chair.
