LARGE ANTIQUE FRENCH WASH COPPER, COPPER PLANTER, WASH TUB CUIVRE, RIVETED & SEAMED, NICELY AGED, 14kg 72cm diam 56cm tall, 1800s

A beautiful large antique French cuivre or copper wash tub planter that has developed an impressive weathered patina to it surfaces.
Acquired from a private sale in Montbard, Burgundy, this had been a planter and was latterly being used as a log bucket.
It is a huge, hand made copper wash tub or wash copper with a “cramp”, or dovetail, seams, copper rivets, and an iron reinforced upper edge.
It dates to the mid 1800s and apparently originated from the laundry or tannery industry.
Large and sculptural showing a great verdigris patina it makes a fantastic planter, log bucket, or just a grand focal point…
This is particularly well pared to the few others of this size and age I can find, either for sale or sold…
In good sound condition with staining, wear, scratches, dents, and knocks consistent with it’s age and use - please examine photos carefully for condition.
The photos best show the condition of this.
It was dirty when acquired and has since had a clean which now shows plenty of copper amongst the verdigris patina. I’m sure it would polish up well if required.
Solid and sound with no structural damage.
The copper is quite thick and strong.
There are many dents and knocks - see photos.
This is no longer watertight with a couple of small puncture holes to the sides and a small split to the base - see photos.
The holes are useful for drainage and don’promise the structure.
The thick upper edge is sound and reinforced by a rusted iron support on its underside.
The edge is copper riveted.
There are a couple of other small rivets to the sides.
There are cramp seams to the side and bottom.
The base is dented but sound.
Nicely aged with a good verdigris coating formed.
The interior side looks to have had some pipe work holes filled at some point just visible as a whiteish mark - see photos.
I can find no maker’s mark.
Approximate dimensions:
72 cm diameter,
56 cm tall,
weighs about 14 kg.
