GERMAN KRUPP 10.5cm KANONE 04 ARTILLERY GUN BRASS SHELLCASE
CORRECT DIAMETER (110cm), LENGTH (505cm WITH SHELL TIP) AND WEIGHT, FOR A WW1 GERMAN 10.5cm ARTILLERY SHELLCASE. NO OTHER SHELL TYPE FULFILLS THE SPECIFICATIONS OF THIS SHELLCASE.
THE GERMAN, 1904 DESIGNED, KRUPP 10.5cm KANONE 04 ARTILLERY GUN FIRED THESE SHELLS. ALTHOUGH OF 10.5cm (105mm) CALIBRE IT ACTUALLY FIRED 11.0cm (110mm) SHELLS, WEIGHING 41 POUNDS (18.5KG !) EACH AT A VELOCITY OF 551 m/s (1,808 ft/s) UP TO 10,398 m (11,264 yards)
The 10.5cm Kanone 04 was the standard German 10.5cm field artillery gun at the start of the First World War, and only the second gun with a modern recoil system (mounted below the barrel) to enter service with the German army. Most examples lacked a gun shield bined with their wooden spoked wheels gave them a rather old-fashioned appearance, but the K 04 was actually one of the most modern guns in the German arsenal when it first appeared.
The first six guns were used in an experimental battery in 1904, and the type was accepted for service with the foot artillery in 1905 as the 10.5cm Kanone 04. It could be transported in one load by a team of six horses, or it could be broken down into 2 loads (tandem hitches) for crossing rough terrain. By July 1914 there were 216 in service, including around 32 with a gun shield - the K 04/12. By October 1918 the K 04 equipped 121 batteries with 484 in service.
